Contraceptive Clinic Journey
Registration/Booking In
On arrival to Whitegate Health Centre, please go to the Sexual Health Services Clinic on the Ground floor on the left hand side of the building. Please go through the double doors and you will enter the reception and waiting room area for the clinic.
You can book into the clinic by two methods – filling out a registration form which you can collect from the receptionist (or down load from the website and bring it with you) or you can use one of our touch screen booking-in units located in the reception area.
You will then be asked to have a seat in the waiting area. The Doctor or Nurse will come to collect you from the waiting room.
Sexual Health Services use a unique patient numbering system which you will be given when you see the doctor/nurse. This is known as your Contraceptive Clinic number, which is your unique number.
Consultation with the doctor/nurse
The Doctor or Nurse will then call you from the waiting room and direct you into a consultation room. The doctor/nurse will ask you some questions around your general health and medical history. These questions will help them to decide which methods of contraception may be suitable for you. They will also record your blood pressure (BP), weight, height and Body Mass Index (BMI).
The doctor or nurse will discuss a wide range of contraceptive methods with you to help to decide which methods may suit you best.
Once you have chosen a method of contraception, the doctor or nurse may give you your chosen method (such as contraceptive pills or condoms) to take away with you.
If you need to see a doctor or specialist nurse as part of your consultation – for instance, if you choose the IUD/IUS (coil) or Implanon (contraceptive implant) as your method of contraception – you will be asked to wait in the sub-waiting area.
The doctor or specialist nurse will call you to go their consultation room. An example of when this may occur is if you attend requesting an IUD/IUS (Coil) or Implanon (Contraceptive Implant).
In most cases you will only need to see one doctor or nurse as part of your visit.
Who will be present during my IUD/IUS consultation?
IUD/IUS are inserted or removed by a doctor specialising in contraception. A health care assistant (HCA) will be present to support you and assist the doctor with the procedure.
How will I get my results if I have swabs taken?
Any swabs taken during your consultation will be sent to the lab for testing. Most results will be ready in 10 to 14 working days from when the tests were taken.
We will only contact you via mobile or text (unless specified otherwise) for positive or abnormal results. If you wish you can also attend the clinic during normal opening hours to find out your results in person. However, please be aware that an appointment is necessary for this.
If you receive a positive result for any of the tests taken (eg Chlamydia), you will need to return to the clinic for antibiotic treatment. Your partner may also need treatment, which we can arrange.
